Introduction To Our Electronics Division

Today in Electronics there are many exciting things going on. We are expanding rapidly throughout the
southeast United States, with many of our customers represented in the form of repeat business. We are currently seeing the largest expansion in our CCTV product line. We feel this expansion is in part due to our ability to deliver a high end product with a middle of the road price tag. Our access control and automatic gate products are taking off as well. We attribute this surge in growth, despite an economic downturn, to our customer service and dedication to quality in everything that we do. For many years in the electronic security industry we have experienced competition that appeared to be satisfied with the lackluster customer service that became known as the standard. We have taken a proactive approach towards meeting the demands of our customers and our market as a whole, and our approach is beginning to pay off in terms of sales.

For the last several years there has been a trend toward a merger of sorts with the IT segment as well as
electronic security. As more and more security devices communicate across local and wide area networks there has been a greater demand for companies in our business to gravitate towards an IT mentality. We believe that we answered the call and our customers are consistently impressed with our knowledge of computer networks and our ability to create and maintain those networks. We currently work in many environments that dictate we enable devices to share information across these networks and for the vast majority these are existing networks. We also feel that we are on the cutting edge of the new technology to come, and how that technology is used and optimized. We have already begun building networks for customers that are solely dedicated to the electronic security of these facilities, and with the IP cameras beginning to flood the market we have more customers asking for these products.

We are very excited about the future and are constantly looking for ways to improve our business in a
variety of ways. Please feel free to contact us at 800-239-5720 if there is anything that we can do to help your
business.

Sincerely,
Bobby Richardson
Electronics Manager

Let’s Engage Our Employees

Employee engagement can be defined as “a heightened emotional connection that an employee feels for his or her organization, that influences him or her to exert greater discretionary effort to his or her work.” There have been many studies on the benefit of employee engagement. According to a Gallup study, 54% of employees are disengaged, 17% are actively disengaged, and only 29% can be considered as engaging their time and talents. Engaged employees have been shown to willingly contribute their time, talents and abilities to the success of an organization. They not only commit to achieving a company’s goals, engaged employees often, at their own volition, extend their discretionary effort to go above and beyond their management’s acceptable performance standards.

Gallup’s research also revealed how disengaged employees adversely impact a company’s performance and profits. According to the research findings disengaged employees result in 27% more absenteeism, 31% more turnover, 51% less effective and 62% more accidents. Stephen Covey, in his book “The Speed of Trust,” indicated that these numbers conservatively cost American businesses between $250 billion and $350 billion annually.

Now for the good news. The research findings also reported that engaged employees account for 12% higher customer satisfaction scores, 18% higher productivity, 12% higher profitability and 17% higher earnings per share. How do organizations capitalize on these results? There are many drivers but the strongest of all is the performance of leaders which carries the most influence on the actions, behaviors and, ultimately, the engagement of employees.

The responsibility for engaging employees falls squarely on DSI’s Management team. Fortunately, there are a few low cost, low tech and high touch ways that our manager’s can build higher levels of engagement into DSI’s organizational culture.

• Show that you care about your employees. On a regular basis, demonstrate a sincere interest in them not only as a person but in their health and safety.
• Demonstrate genuine interest in their development. Improve engagement by demonstrating a sincere interest in your employees’ professional growth and development. Consider engaging in frequent, structured and realistic discussions about their development interests and plans.
• Recognize achievements. Simply offering genuine praise and low-cost recognition earns higher levels of engagement. Praise and recognize employees whenever their behavior or actions tie into your organization’s goals and desired results. However, make sure the recognition offered holds specific meaning for the individual.

Ultimately, you must keep in mind that our officers are DSI’s greatest assets. Their collective ideas, feedback and enthusiasm for what they do can help DSI grow and succeed. Some people are naturally wired to give their all and do their best no matter where they work. But the majority of people require the guidance of skilled managers who welcome their ideas, ask for feedback and generate enthusiasm in order to have a sense of purpose and energy about what they do.

DSI Recognizes Employees/Celebrates 40 Years At Annual Christmas Party

On Friday December 4th, DSI employees, customers, and friends gathered to celebrate Christmas, recognize employee contributions in 2009, and to commemorate 40 years in business.

Here are the highlights from the evening’s festivities:

2009 Employee Awards

(L to R) HR Manager Clay Jordan, Operations Manager Rich Hunter, Branch Manager Jim Ingolia

The first award of the evening was the 2009 OT Champion presented by Human Resources Manager Clay Jordan. This year’s recipient was the Tampa Branch. In presenting the award Clay commented on how important this award is, and how diligent the Tampa Branch had been in keeping their OT well below the goal of 2% for the entire year, “It is a true testament to the determination and leadership of Jim Ingolia (Branch Manager), Rich Hunter (Operations Manager), and Gia Kelkboom (Payroll Coordinator) that they have been able to manage the difficult issue of OT all year long. It is only because they take it very seriously and put a tremendous amount of effort towards this goal each and every day.”

Jim Ingolia and Rich Hunter accepted the award on behalf of the Tampa Branch.

COO Eddie Sorrells summed up the importance of this position by commenting that “The payroll coordinator’s job is one of the most, if not the most, important job within a branch. Without a well organized and efficient employee in this position, the branch will never be able to fulfill its mission to our employees and customers. Dena is certainly deserving of this award since she is an excellent example of what this position is all about”.

The payroll coordinator of the year award is selected by the DSI Corporate Accounting Department.

(L to R) COO Eddie Sorrells, President Alan Clark, Runnell Clark (Mrs. AB Clark), Tony Coates- AB Clark Award Winner

One of the highlights of each year’s award presentations is the announcement of the AB Clark Service Superiority Award. This award is given each year to an employee who embodies the traits of our founder A. B. Clark. This award is selected by the corporate management team and the recipient must display characteristics such as Superior leadership, Teamwork, Excellent Customer Service Skills, and possess strong qualities of honesty, integrity and dependability. He is more concerned about getting the job done”, remarked COO Eddie Sorrells upon presenting the award to Coates.  Coates was surprised and very appreciative for the recognition. The highlight of the 2009 awards was the presentation of the Davis Hallford Branch of the Year Award to the Tampa Branch. Davis’ parents, DSI CFO Mike Hallford and his wife Camille, were on hand to make the presentation to Jim Ingolia (Branch Manager), Rich Hunter (Operations Manager), and Dale Matthews (Regional Manager). Mike remarked “It is an honor for Camille and I to have this award named after Davis, because we know he meant so much to DSI, and DSI meant so much to him”.

In order to earn this award the Branch must excel in the following areas: Profitability, OT Management, Customer Service, Safety, and adherence to DSI Policies and Procedures. And as many commented during the presentation, the Tampa team is a true textbook case of what a DSI management team can do to make the branch a success.

Adding their own accolades to the Tampa team were Corp Operations Director Gene Sanders and Director of Marketing Keith Jennings. Sanders commented on how the Tampa staff had started with a goal and never wavered, “ I have seen Dale, Jim, Rich, Gia, and the whole Tampa team stay true to DSI fundamentals each and every day, and that commitment has shown in their overwhelming success over the last year”. Jennings added “I knew when I first met Jim he had the right vision to take this branch to the next level, and I have seen through his, and his team’s, efforts that vision turn into a reality.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OF OUR 2009 AWARD WINNERS!
